MECHANICAL ENGINEERING HERITAGE NO.123
Macadam Roller SAKAI R1
Among the various compaction machines (road rollers) essential for contemporary road maintenance work, three-wheeled macadam rollers were imported from Europe and the United States until the 1920s. Sakai Kosakusho (now Sakai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.), which started manufacturing and selling the first domestically produced macadam roller with an internal combustion engine in 1930 (Showa 5), developed a new model called the R1 in 1968 (Showa 43.) Its all-wheel drive, uniform diameter, uniform wire pressure, and synchronized drive system resolved the flaws of previous models and emerged as the industry standard.
