The theme of "Tatara to Katana"

Understanding the spread of technology, culture, and tradition through the sharing of the ancient iron-making technique "Tatara" and the arts and crafts of "katana" (sword)

The story of "Tatara to Katana"

Tatara iron making, an ancient Japanese iron-making technique, has been practiced in the Izumo region of Shimane Prefecture for 1,400 years. At its peak from the late Edo period to the Meiji period (1868-1912), approximately 80% of the nation's iron was made in the Izumo region at the foot of the Chugoku Mountains.

Today, the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of tamahagane, a product unique to tatara iron manufacturing, is the so-called "Japanese sword," a sword made using traditional Japanese manufacturing methods. The Japanese sword has been increasingly refined as a weapon in accordance with the times, but its value has since increased from a weapon to an art and craft object.

In this event, it is possible to embody the Story of the sublimation from the formation of the material iron to the traditional craftwork called a sword.
