Technology Transfer during the construction of Lake Biwa Canal*

Abstract:
The most advanced technologies were used in the construction of the Lake Biwa Canal in Kyoto that it was a herald of city basis construction in Japan in the Meiji era. It started from the very accurate surveying technology and ended up with the introduction of business water-power-generation. They were the leading technologies in the world then. The engineers' originality, devices, and their way of thinking, that realized a city development using a canal in Japan just after opening up a country, will be made clear.
