Kenzo NONAMI

Journal of System Design and Dynamics (2007) DOI:10.1299/jsdd.1.120

This paper describes the present state of research and development for civil use autonomous unmanned aircraft. In particular, the history of civil use UAVs, the research and development in the world and in Japan, and the subjects and prospects for control and operation systems of civil use autonomous UAVs are described.

[↑] Speed, Trajectory and Increment in the Number of Cells of Singly Flagellated Bacteria Swimming Close to Boundaries

Tonau NAKAI, Masayuki KIKUDA, Yuichiro KURODA, Tomonobu GOTO

Journal of Biomechanical Science and Engineering(2009) DOI:10.1299/jbse.4.2

The influence of a rigid boundary and a free boundary on the motion of singly flagellated bacteria is experimentally investigated. The speed of backward swimming cells is faster near the rigid or free boundary than in the free space without boundary. It is also found that backward swimming speed is faster than forward near the rigid or free boundary. The trajectory of the cells swimming backward near a rigid or free boundary comprises circular parts, while most of forward swimming cells have straight trajectories. Backward swimming cells tend to gather on a rigid or free boundary rather than forward swimming cells. These asymmetric characteristics between forward and backward motions close to a rigid boundary has been predicted by a fluid dynamic simulation.

[→] How is residual stress/strain detected in bone tissue ?

Shigeru TADANO, Satoshi YAMADA
Mechanical Engineering Reviews (2016) DOI:10.1299/mer.15-00291

Recent experimental approaches were reviewed to the residual stress/strain in bone tissue using X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. After a brief introduction of the experimental methods and obtained results, we discussed the generation mechanisms and biomechanical implications of the residual stress/strain in bone tissue. Strain gauge approaches provided the existence of residual stresses in the bone at the whole bone level. XRD approaches have also provided the existence of residual stresses at the tissue and mineral phase levels. The residual strains at the mineral phase related to the degree of orientation of the HAp crystals. The distributions of residual stress wereobtained around the surface and along the radial depth of the diaphysis of quadrupedal extremities. The correlation between the residual stress and the osteon structures was indicated and the difference of residual stress with growth was revealed. It would appear that the residual stress state might be generated by the indeterminate structure in the hierarchical structures of the bone tissue relating to bone adaptation with the bone formation and reconstruction process. A long-term study is needed to better understand the generation and biomechanical implications of residual stress in bone tissue throughout the hierarchical structure during maturation and aging.
