1)  Development of High-Current Plasma Assisted Deposition system

Ryuichi IIDA, Tsukishima Kikai Co., Ltd

Digital electric appliance market is actively headed toward the start of digital broadcasting in recent years, represented by thin and large screen TV, DVD recorders, digital cameras and other devices.  For all of these devices, optics technology becomes the key and various optical elements such as lenses are used.  Optical thin-film multi-layers that appropriately fit application on infrared-cut filters are formed on the surface of those optical elements.
Our thin-film coating process technology is developed from pressure gradient type plasma source together with vacuum evaporation called, gPlasma Assisted Deposition (PAD) method,h and developed the High-Current Plasma Assisted Deposition system (XLS1500PA) by combining experience from these two vacuum technologies.  The feature of XLS1500PA is to take reactive evaporation in a plasma activity atmosphere.
As the film is formed mainly by metallic compounds, our attention is focused on applying the PAD technology effectively on optical thin-films.  The configuration and features of XLS1500PA are described, and characteristics of the optical thin-film formed by this PAD system are introduced in this paper.

2) Development of the Distance Control Assist system (DCA)

    Yosuke AKATSU, Nissan Motor Co.,Ltd

The Distance Control Assist system (DCA) helps drivers control the distance between themselves and the vehicle in front. The system uses a radar sensor installed in the front bumper which is able to determine the following distance of the drivers as well as the relative vehicle speed of both cars. If the driver releases the brakes in order to help the driver maintain an appropriate following distance. If the system determines that braking is required, an indicator will appear on an instrument panel and buzzer will sound. And the system will move the gas pedal upwards in order to assist the driver to switch to the brake pedal.

3) Trend of Driverfs Operation Assistant Systems

Hiroshi TAKAHASHI, Shonan Institute of Technology

Driver assistant systems are both warning assistant systems (WAS) and operation assistant systems (OAS). In this paper, the OAS are focused.  The OAS are the systems that interleave partially automated operation with driverfs manual driving operation. For instance, the typical applications of the OAS are the collision mitigation systems, lane keep support systems and adaptive cruise control.
In this paper, some applications that have already lunched in the Japanese market are introduced. And the framework of the OAS is discussed. Finally, the paper suggets some of the future applications related to the OAS, which are the adaptive operation assistants depending on each driverfs characteristics.

4) A tool for supporting decision making processes and its possibility in mechanical design     and development

    Yutaka NOMAGUCHI, Osaka University

A decision making by an individual and a group of engineers takes place in various scenes of design and technological development. From the viewpoint of knowledge management, it is important to record a process of decision making and various referred information so that designers and engineers can share and reuse them in order to efficiently and effectively carry out a future design. This article briefly explains a research trend of supporting decision making processes, and a representative support tool, called Compendium. Compendium is an IBIS-based hypertext mapping tool that was released for free download, and subsequently it was made open source. The tool is steadily growing in polish and sophistication in a research and user community. Case studies show its possibility in supporting decision making processes of a complicated mechanical system's design and development.

5) Utilization of Biogas

    Tateo NAKAZAWA, Nippon Sharyo, Ltd.

Through the experiment since 2004 in the operation of biogas plant processing waste of 200 dairy cows, which was installed next door to cowshed of a dairy farming company, we, Nippon Sharyo verified that hydrogen sulfide emitted in the process of methane fermentation is removed by some bacteria and electric power is continuously and stably generated by compressed biogas.
We found that some bacteria settling in the upper section of fermentation tank digest hydrogen sulfide under aerobic condition.  Activity of bacteria is most effective under air supply of 5-7% of total biogas volume. Through this process, the volume of hydrogen sulfide is reduced from 3,500 ppm to 700 ppm.
It is well known that moisture contained in biogas causes trouble for a generator.  We prevented such trouble with biogas compressed by a compressor.  The micro gas turbine generator is effectively working under the continuous supply of compressed biogas from a storage gas tank and therefore, has no trouble for 30 months since the operation started. The dairy farming company utilizes electric power generated from biogas plant to operation of dairy equipment and saves a large amount of electric charge every year.

7) Research on Viscoe - elasticity Plasticity Unified Constitutive Relationship of     Vibration Rotary Forging and Its Hysteresis Procedure Simulation

Cai Gaipin, Jiang Zhihong, Luo Xiaoyan
Jiangxi Univerisity of Science and Technology

As visco-elasticity-plasticity material constitutive relationship was analyzed, a hypothesis yield face which was not effected by temperature was popularly used to suppose viscoe-elasticity-plasticity material deformation trend, and the inherent law of metal material in heat deformation was difficultly opened out by this method. Thus, the viscoe-elasticity-plasticity material constitutive relationship needed to be built by the continuum mechanics theory and thermodynamics under the conditions of temperature field effect consideration and the hypothesis yield face overcame. After motion hardening variable and the identification hardening variable introduced, the inner variables and stress evolvement course were analyzed in heat steady state creep forming the viscoe-elasticity-plasticity material constitutive equations were established. And by means of Oula difference method, the unified constitutive equations numerical solutions were also obtained. According to a cycle of strain ratio loading and by MATLAB computer simulation, the varied law of inner variables, stress and strain were found, and the validity of the viscoe-elasticity-plasticity unified constitutive models were validated.

9) Development of Membrane Filters with Nanostructured Porous Layer by Coating of     Metal Nanoparticles Sintered onto a Micro-Filter

Dong Geun Lee1, Seok Joo Park2, Young Ok Park2, Jeong In Ryu1
(1: Korea Institute of Energy Research, 2: Chungnam National University)

The membrane filter adhered with nanostructured porous layer was made by heat treatment after deposition of nanoparticle-agglomerates sintered in aerosol phase onto a conventional micron-fibrous metal filter as a substrate filter. The Sintered-Nanoparticle-Agglomerates-coated NanoStructured porous layer Membrane Filter (SNA-NSMF), of which the filtration performance was improved compared with the conventional metal membrane filters, was developed by adhesion of nanoparticle-agglomerates of dendrite structure sintered onto the micron-fibrous metal filter. The size of nanoparticle-agglomerates of dendrite structure decreased with increasing the sintering temperature because nanoparticle-agglomerates shrank. When shrinking nanoparticle-agglomerates were deposited and treated with heat onto the conventional micron-fibrous metal filter, pore size of nanostructured porous layer decreased. Therefore, pressure drops of SNA-NSMFs increased from 0.3 to 0.516 kPa and filtration efficiencies remarkably increased from 95.612 to 99.9993%.

10) Optimal Design of an MRI Device Considering the Homogeneity of the Magnetic Field

Junghoon Lee, Jeonghoon Yoo , Yonsei University

This paper is to suggest a concept design of the permanent magnet type magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) device based on the parameter optimization method. Pulse currents in the gradient coils will introduce the effect of eddy currents in the ferromagnetic material, which will worsen the quality of imaging. In order to equalize the magnetic flux in the MRI device for good imaging, the eddy current effect in the ferromagnetic material must be taken into account. This study attempts to use the design of experiment (DOE) and the response surface method (RSM) for equalizing the magnetic flux of the permanent magnet type MRI device using that the magnetic flux can be calculated directly using a commercial finite element analysis package. As a result, optimal shapes of the pole and the yoke of the PM type MRI device can be obtained. The commercial package, ANSYS, is used for analyzing the magnetic field problem and obtaining the resultant magnetic flux.

Sung Yong Ha, Chang Sik Lee, Hanyang University

An experimental investigation was conducted to investigate the effect of Bio-ethanol fuel on the engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics under various engine operating conditions. To investigate the effect of bio-ethanol fuel, the commercial 1.6L SI engine equipped with 4 cylinders was tested on EC dynamometer. The engine performance including brake torque, brake specific fuel consumption, and brake specific energy consumption of bio-ethanol fuel was compared to those obtained by pure gasoline. Furthermore, the exhaust emissions were analyzed in terms of regulated exhaust emissions such as unburned hydrocarbon, oxides of nitrogen, and carbon monoxide. Result of this work showed that the effect of blending of ethanol to gasoline caused drastic decrease of emissions under various operating conditions. Also, improved engine performance such as brake torque and brake power was indicated for bio-ethanol fuel.

Key Words: SI Engine, Bio-Ethanol, Combustion Characteristics, Exhaust Emission Characteristics
