The symposium will be held September 14-17, 2003 at Tokai University Pacific Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Background In 1997, the study group of Aqua Bio-Mechanisms (ABMEC) was organized in Japan. Goals of this group are: first, to understand the mechanisms that enable aquatic animals to move effectively and efficiently through their environment, and second to analyze the characteristics of their various forms of behavior. Then, based on the previous understanding, to develop environment-friendly machines that emulate the natural movements and responses of biological creatures in the underwater environment, thereby emulating true aqua bio-mechanisms. In an effort to encourage broad participation in this evolving science and technology, ABMEC has held the First International Symposium on Aqua Bio-Mechanisms at Honolulu in 2000. This symposium attracted 69 participants from Japan, U.S.A. and other 5 countries, and had 8 keynote speeches, 28 oral presentations and 20 poster presentations. The symposium was successful to provide a unique opportunity for the international community not only to mutual understanding among participants, but also to interdisciplinary discussions between biologists and engineers. ABMEC is planning the Second International Symposium on Aqua Bio-Mechanisms (ISABMEC 2003) in cooperation with Northeastern University, Marine Science Center (NUMSC). NUMSC has organized an International Seminar on Neurotechnology for Biomimetic Robots in 2000 that have provided a forum for the exchange of information among biologists and engineers involved in the development of autonomous vehicle systems. Both ABMEC and NUMSC recognize that bio-engineering may well have significant impact on the future development ofautonomous swimming and flying systems. The proposed symposium will provide a unique opportunity for the international community not only to better assess this impact, but also perhaps to help influence it. Aims and Scope ISABMEC 2003 seeks to provide a common forum for interdisciplinary discussions between biologists and engineers of the natural autonomous systems and locomotion mechanisms, particularly swimming and flying, in animals ranging from flagellated microorganisms to marine mammals. Topics (1) Locomotive mechanisms of animals in flying (2) Locomotive mechanisms of animals in swimming (3) Locomotive mechanisms of flagella (4) Hydrodynamics of swimming and flying of animals (5) Applications to engineering problems such as robotics (6) Acoustic and other localization mechanisms Keynote Speakers : Prof. Michael Dickinson, California Institute of Technology Prof. Charles Brokaw, California Institute of Technology Prof. Steven Vogel, Duke University Dr. Hao Liu, The Institute of Physical and Chemical Research Prof. Michael S.
